What is Trichology?
Trichology is a branch of medicine that deals specifically with the study of hair and the scalp. Qualified practitioners possess an extensive knowledge of the functioning of human hair and the scalp, and the concerns relating to the diseases and disorders it can be affected by.
Our hair is of psychological importance to us and is often a barometer of our health; any form of hair loss or scalp disorder may leave us feeling extremely self-conscious and embarrassed. Trichologists can diagnose, offer advice and treat hair and scalp problems, including some forms of alopecia or scaly, dry or greasy scalps. When necessary it may be appropriate to liaise with a client’s GP for medication, refer them to a dermatologist or advise a blood test when an underlying medical problem is suspected.
About us
The Northants Hair & Scalp Clinic (NHSC) was founded by Lisa Gilbey MIT, a registered qualified trichologist whose interest in the profession stems from 15 years of hairdressing. Running her own successful business in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, she saw clients suffering from an array of hair and scalp disorders, and sought ways to ease them of their concerns and embarrassments.
Lisa trained as a trichologist at London’s prestigious Institute of Trichologists in 2005 and was elected the John Firmage Certificate of Distinction for her passion and dedication in studying the two-year course. Founded in 1902, this institute is world-renowned and the oldest foremost organisation of its kind whose students leave with an extensive knowledge of human hair and scalp disorders. It was there that she honed her skills in disciplines such as microscopy, biochemistry, microbiology, nutrition and clinical observation, and where she studied under some of the profession’s leading names.
Not only is Lisa a registered member of the Institute of Trichologists, she is also an Assistant Administrator Director and sits on its Board of Directors.
A diligent, enthusiastic and reliable individual, she has voluntarily worked at London’s Battersea Scalp & Hair Clinic, gaining invaluable experience in dealing with patients’ concerns, particularly within the Afro-Caribbean hair type of this south London community. Lisa has also spent time in the laboratories of the Somerset Toiletry Company with Tony Maleedy and the microscopy department at the University of Oxford, ensuring that she can bring her patients the highest possible service.
Consultation
A consultation at the NHSC is a private-based service where we can diagnose and treat your hair loss or scalp complaint. The NHSC ensures qualified trichologist practitioners give their patients a confidential, ethical service, offering guidance and support without the exploitation that often occurs through other forms of traders with a lack of medical knowledge and expensive miracle cures. We treat and diagnose Caucasian and Afro-Caribbean hair types of male and female patients experiencing hair or scalp disorders.
An initial consultation will last approximately one hour. Diagnosing your condition involves conducting a full case history, thoroughly examining your hair and scalp under a magnifying lamp and the use of microscopy to study the hair. We will thoroughly explain the condition, provide you with information to take home and give you an honest, accurate prognosis. In some instances it may be relevant to write a letter to your GP, requesting antibiotics or blood tests to eliminate any underlying medical issues suspected which are included in the cost of the consultation.
A trichologist is a good listener; we ensure confidentiality and offer support to patients.
Topical treatments for home use have been regulated and tested by the MHRA (Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency). This means they are safe, licensed and proven to work and not expensive placebos, miracle cures that have no clinical data.
